A Followup on my last blog

 Dear Friends, 

Just a few minutes after I posted this week’s blog, I came across the news about the horrific flooding in Texas and the tragedy at the Christian camp there.  

I can’t believe the timing. Here I am talking about a fun camp where everyone was invited to ‘Come to Jesus’ etc.  And now we grieve with the nation about this terrible, terrible tragedy.  

Who could have foreseen?  Who could have prepared? One reason we grieve, I think, is that can identify. How many of you have happily dropped (or been dropped) off children of your own?  “They’ll have so much fun,” you think, “It’s so safe!” But then this happened.  

Today I join all of those who are hurting; and rejoice with those who grieve “with hope”. “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.”  (1st Thessalonians 4:13).  

But the good news from last week’s blog is that one of my readers has reported that the lawsuit against Camp I’d-ra-ha-je has been DROPPED! They can now ignore those who were trying to force them into building co-ed bathrooms. 

God is Sovereign, who can understand His ways? Why didn’t He intervene?  It probably won’t give us much peace to remember what God says in Isaiah55:8-9.  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares theLORD.” It certainly won’t stop the pain we’re feeling.  We’re speechless.  All we can say is that all of our hearts go out to those folks, the kids, the parents, the leaders.

 And we look forward to the day when we will stand with those precious loved ones before the God Who loves us more than we can ever imagine. Talk next week.

A Different Kind of Tour

  Recently in Wales, we took TWO £200 tours. Luckily we've budgeted for this, so even though that's expensive (about $300 each), we were OK Both were very enlightening.  The first one took us around to several castles and into the national park of the mountains of Snowdonia.  One of the castles, called Carnarvon, is where Prince Charles became the "Prince of Wales" a few years ago (now he's the King).  I'm pretty sure C.S. Lewis must have seen this castle and used it as inspiration for “Cair Paravel”, the legendary gathering place for Aslan (read “Jesus”) in his “Lion, Witch and Wardrobe” series. The Beauty of Bin Chickens

So I'm happy to say we've just about completely recovered from Cyclone Alfred we had a few weeks ago.   Repairs are being made, roads are open and for the most part there is food on the shelves.  All the studies and events we enjoy are beginning to be happening again. Several of our friends went 9 days with no electricity.  Who knew that the Eucalyptus tree that Australia is famous for has a root system of about 11 inches deep?!  I could probably write a whole blog about that.  And, "Surfers Paradise", our world renowned beach, has no sand, but they say it'll come back. And on another positive note, I’ve had some 'extra' time when everything was still down, to do some 'study' out my back window........looking out over the flooded floodplain. What an interesting time that was.  I don't want the 'lake' to stay there, but it gave me something beautiful to look at while we waited.  Now it's gone again.  Our neighbours have been here 47 ...

Home at Last

 Good Morning and Happy New Year. I’m writing this a little early.  I’ll explain our schedule in a bit, but what Oswald Chambers mentioned in our devotional reading today, January 2nd, really resonated with us (as he often does). He said that we often think that to do something for God requires a plan.  To some extent this is true, but there’s also a case for (Oswald says) simply trusting God and following His lead. When we first mentioned going to this far Asian destination that I’ve been alluding lately to for security reasons, (and please, if you respond, keep the language safe),  so that Tony could share his discipleship course, many of our friends shook their heads and clicked their tongues.  Only a few said, “We’ll pray with you”, and for that we were very very thankful.   This month-long trip has been full of wonder; but also wondering a time or two if we were going to survive.
