What God Has promised

Well, This has been a week.

We're fine ....... but the news from the States is certainly enough to upset anyone.  On the same day as the September 11th Twin Tower attack way back in 2001, a hero of the faith, Charlie Kirk was martyred.

I don't remember much about my mother's funeral because I was only 14.  I do know she suffered immensely for many years, a victim of cancer and the inept therapies of the 60's.  I'm pretty sure there were very few deep theological insights gained as I prayed and prayed for her recovery. Looking back, I think those prayers were most likely selfish, having to do with my own happiness.

But I do remember the words to a song they played at her service.  I hadn't heard it before and probably almost never since that day.

Here are the lyrics.  Maybe some of you will remember the tune.

                                        What God Has Promised

A poem by Annie Johnson Flint (1866-1932)

    God hath not promised

    Skies always blue,

    Flower-strewn pathways

    All our lives through;

    God hath not promised

    Sun without rain

    Joy without sorrow,

    Peace without pain.

    But God hath promised

    Strength for the day,

    Rest for the labour,

    Light for the way,

    Grace for the trials,

    Help from above,

    Unfailing sympathy,

    Undying love.

I think that's pretty much what we're all feeling this week.  No one can imagine what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future. And we thank Him for his Grace.

And as always, we are thankful to you, Precious Readers,

Marsha
